FITS

FITS is an acronym for Flexible Image Transport System. FITS is the de facto standard for astronomical imagery. The standard was originally adopted in 1981 and has been updated since. The system handles standard imagery in addition to spectroscopic, photometric and tabular data. A major feature of the standard is a human readable section of meta-data consisting of keyword/data pairs.
